It is the editorial intention for this monthly report to involve people in a lucid and technically competent discussion of UFO phenomenon. These reports will discuss the history of the phenomenon, UFO flight characteristics, the occupants, UFO physical effects, their propulsion methods, the technological and theoretical implications, and the social and spiritual implications of the phenomenon.

UFOs AND THE SUPERNATURAL
The supernatural is that which is beyond the normal experience and understanding. In many UFO encounters people experience phenomenon which are considered supernatural. In this article I am going to discuss de - materialization and re - materialization. I am going to delve into some of the possible logical implications when the phenomenon is taken at face value, as opposed to being dismissed as being impossible by the normal authorities of scientific thought.
In the book URI the author Andrija Puharich describes many incidents of cassette tapes and other objects being dematerialized and rematerialized in association with seen and unseen UFOs.
In the book THE ANDREASSON AFFAIR the author Raymond E. Fowler reports Betty Andreasson's experience with the occupants of a UFO that landed in her back yard. She witnessed the occupants, four humanoid beings, pass directly through her wooden kitchen door as if it was not there. She saw their leader move his hand back and forth over her bible and other books materialized on top of her bible. When they took her to the UFO she also passed through the kitchen door as if it was not there.
In the book TWO NIGHTS TO REMEMBER by Carl Anderson, he recounts the events of a weekend camping trip to the Mojave desert of California where UFO encounters occurred. During one encounter the tent in which Carl and his wife Stalla were in dematerialized ( became transparent ) so that they could see the flying saucer hovering just outside of their camp. The side walls and top of the station wagon in which Carl's brother - in - law, Jim, and his wife Terry were sleeping also dematerialized so they, too, could see the saucer. In a latter encounter Jim, who had been trying to attract the saucer's attention with a road flare had badly burned his right tumb with the flare. He was in great pain and the saucer beings transformed his thumb back into its pre - burn condition.
In the town of Cergy - Pontoise, France, on the night of November 27, 1980, a bright white glowing ball of light was seen to land on and then expand into a large orange ball of light on and in the car Frank Fontaine was sitting in. Mr. Fontaine dematerialized and the glow went out. He was gone for a week almost to the minute and then rematerialized in the same spot with no immediate memory of his abduction by aliens.
Once each year, Dr. H. Spencer Lewis, then the head of the Rosicrucians in America, would publicly perform an apport ( dematerializing and rematerializing an object at another location ) in the presence of several hundred witnesses. The author Joseph J. Weed in his book PSYCHIC ENERGY reports personally witnessing Dr. Lewis apporting a bunch of roses some thirty feet.
It is actual cases of de - materialization and re - materialization like the ones I have listed above along with thousands of other cases that form the proof of the phenomenon for those that have not experienced it. Once a physicist comes to accept the reality of organized matter structures being dematerialized and then being rematerialized with maintenance of the original detailed atomic structure interrelationships, it must be concluded that there is another matter type in the universe. A matter type which is superior to normal matter. The truth of these last two statements may not be too apparent to those not trained in physics, so let me illustrate the need for another matter type to explain the phenomenon of de - materialization and re - materialization. The energy content of an object of mass M is given by E ( energy ) = M ( mass ) C2 ( speed of light squared ). One kilogram ( 2.2 pounds ) of mass is equivalent to 9 x 1016 Joules. This is enough energy to vaporize the Los Ageles basin. Now, from case experience, masses of this and larger amounts are dematerialized in a fraction of a second. Yet we do not see any evidence of large scale energy transport i.e. intense light beam, ionization track glow from large scale transport of atoms, etc.. There is no known physics phenomena that can transport atoms invisibly to distances of many tens of meters at high speed without showing some visible manifestations.
The bright white ball of light in Mr. Frank Fontaine's de - materialization and that of many others has some interesting implications about this other matter type. The white ball of light that expands into a large orange ball just before de - materialization seems to be some kind of sensor net or web that maps out the detailed matter structure which is to be transported. The light emission is consistent with what would be expected from the de - excitation of nitrogen molecules and oxygen molecules of the air. The is the type of de - excitation that would come after the molecules have absorbed energy from being examined by this sensor net or web of this other matter type. For example, if some machine is to transport some object by the de - materialization method, it must apparently dismantle the atoms of this object and then reassemble them in their same previous interrelationships. To do this feat it would seem reasonable to assume that the machine would have to ascertain whether or not it was up to or had the ability to dematerialize / transport the particular object or being in question. It would have had to map out the object to be transported. It would have to know the amount ( mass ) of matter and the particular structure details ( specific atom types and interrelationships involved ). To gain information about an object, energy transfer or energy flow modulation must occur between the observed and the observer, otherwise there is no interaction and therefore no information exchange. In other words the would - be observer and observed will be invisible to each other unless they exchange energy and / or modulate energy flow in each other or in each other's instruments.
When examining cases of de - materialization and re - materialization involving a UFO , we can imagine some type of machine aboard the UFO that carries out the process ( the transporter _ "Beam me up, Scotty". ). However, when we consider cases of apporting such as done by Dr. H. Spencer Lewis, where is the machine? We are left only with the spiritual and psychic aspect of living things and beings. We are left with that mysterious dynamic living field that shows up emanating from the hands of psychic healers in the Kirlian photography 1 of the palms of their hands. We are left with the phantom phenomenon2 of Kirlian photography. We are left with the miracles of Jesus the Christ, i.e. the removal ( demeter-
ialization ) of the bacteria and dead flesh associated with leprosy and its replacement ( materialization ) with healthy flesh. The observed phenomenon requires another matter type that can manipulate normal matter at "will". A matter of much finer structure and much higher field propagation velocities than that of normal matter.
When we are dealing with UFO phenomenon, we are dealing with phenomenon generated by civilizations that are, in general, a million to many billions of years advanced both in physical and spiritual technology.
The technical corner section of this issue deals with the possibility of the vacuum ( the volume of the universe ) being crystalline in nature. This vacuum crystal structure is composed of another matter type. Both normal matter and this proposed or required other matter type are expressions of the vacuum being crystalline. I hope I have given you food for thought and that when you hear of a de - materialization or materialization event you will not immediately dismiss it as being impossible. Remember Jesus the Christ and his Sermon on the Mount and how the people were feed.

1) Kirlian photography
Electrical technicians Seviyon and Valentina Kirlian of the Soviet Union in 1930s discovered / noted that the radio frequency high voltage corona discharges of living things had both static and dynamic properties unlike the static properties of non - living things ( see Figure 1 ). Over the last 50 + years the Kirlians and others have done extensive research on and development of high voltage radio frequency discharge patterns of living things from bacteria to man. Essentially 90 % of the corona discharge pattern and dynamics of living things can be understood and explained by surface electrical conductivity changes, near UV light emission, and surface water vapor emission. The dynamics of the corona discharge are so sensitive to the internal working condition of living specimens that plant bacteria and virus diseases show up in the corona discharge days or weeks before normal tests or observations detect them.
2) The phantom phenomena of Kirlian photography
When the high frequency / high voltage field of the Kirlian photography apparatus consists of short duty cycle bunches of three megacycle oscillations ran at audio frequency , the phantom phenomena occurs and is repeatable. The phantom phenomena is this. Take a Kirlian photography picture of a living whole leaf of a plant at the signal setting discussed above. You will see the corona plasma discharge around the surface of the leaf. Now, if you cut away, let us say, one forth of the leaf and take the Kirlian photograph again you will get the same corona / plasma discharge pattern around the surface of the leaf as before. However, the discharge pattern will be only one tenth as intense as before in that region where the leaf has been removed, but it still exists. It has the same geometric structure and dynamical properties that it had before the leaf region was cut away. And this phenomena remains until the remaining leaf dies.

THE TECHNICAL CORNER
THE VACUUM AS A CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURE
Until the turn of this last century, the concept that the vacuum was a material medium was popular in the scientific community. What the medium actually consisted of was left undetermined. The basis for this belief was that light had experimentally been demonstrated to be a transverse wave phenomena ( an electrical shear wave ). From mechanical transverse wave phenomenon experience and mathematical and theoretical considerations, it was thought that a semi - rigid material medium was necessary for formation and propagation of transverse waves. However, the Michelson - Morley experiment which showed the constancy of the speed of light relative to all observers in relative motion to the vacuum apparently ruled out the existence of the vacuum as a material medium which could be stressed to produce and propagate transverse electromagnetic waves. With the advent of the Special Theory of Relativity, the vacuum as a material medium was abandoned. However, Albert Einstein pointed out in his 1920 lecture on General Theory of Relativity to the Prussian Academy of Sciences,3 that relativity had not removed the possibility of the vacuum being a material medium. Relativity had only reduced the number of properties the medium could have in a classical field theory. The ten gravitational field potential functions guv now determined the space - time properties of the vacuum. In other words, the concept of the vacuum as a material medium had not been overthrown by experiment, but only mathematically transmuted.
In this article, I am going to explore the idea of the vacuum being a crystallization of another matter type. The potential consequences are so extensive and profound that several articles will be required to outline and delve into some of the potential consequences.
For this proposed vacuum crystalline structure to be of any interest or importance in our world, it must have some dynamic or semi - rigid properties like matter crystal structures of our normal experience. A perfectly rigid crystal structure with no internal dynamic processes does not have change or "energy flow".
Let us ask some of the questions we want answered about the various properties of this proposed vacuum crystal structure, if on should exist.
a) Lattice type
There are only 240 crystal lattice types in three dimensions. Which lattice type or types is the vacuum crystalline material composed of ? Just how complex and diversified is the crystal structure of the vacuum ? Is it comparable to a simple cubic crystal structure or much more complex as that exemplified by a complex protein when crystallized or somewhere in between ? What is the physical size of the unit cell ? Is the vacuum crystal essentially a single or a polymorphic crystalline structure ? Perhaps we should also consider the possibility of the vacuum being a quasi - crystal structure.
b) Lattice basis
Normal matter is composed of atoms and molecules. These atoms and or molecules form the basis for the lattice points of normal matter crystal structures. What are the fundamental constituents of this other matter type which form the basis for the lattice points of the vacuum crystal ? Are they atomic - like or molecular - like or something else ? Do they have their own quantum mechanics interactions or what ?
c) Crystal bonding
The fundamental constituents of normal matter crystals have various bonding mechanisms for formation and maintenance of crystal structure. For example, covalent bonding, ionic bonding, and metallic bonding. What are the bonding mechanisms or forces that bind together the vacuum crystal ?
d) Vacuum crystal temperature
From the theory of crystal lattice dynamics we know that if we have a crystal lattice at non - zero temperature, phonons ( quantitized lattice vibrations ) will exist on that lattice. Now what is the temperature of the vacuum crystal ? Does the vacuum crystal have both longitudinal and transverse phonons ? What does the vacuum crystal phonon dispersion relationship look like ?
e) Specific heat and thermal conductivity
If we have a crystal temperature, then there will be a crystal specific heat and a thermal conductivity, what are they ?
f) Crystal density
What is the mass or inertia - like parameter for the fundamental constituents of the other matter type which makes up the vacuum crystal lattice ?
g) Bulk modules
What is the bulk modulus of the vacuum crystal ? What is the associated speed or speeds of "sound" in the crystal ?
h) Dielectric constant
Does the fundamental constituents of this other matter type have an associated force field which is analogous to the electrical field ? Is the crystal medium "electrically " polerizable ?
i) Electrical conductivity
Are there fundamental "charge" - like entities that are free to move through the crystal structure of this other matter type ?
What are some of the possible implications of the vacuum being a crystal structure ? In crystals of normal matter we have observed many types of quantum and bulk collective crystal phenomenon. For example :
1) Plasmons ( quantitized plasma oscillations ),
2) Quantitized electron momentum in crystals,
3) Phonons ( quantitized lattice vibrations in crystalline like structures ),
4) Super conductivity ( a phonon coupled with two electrons ),
5) Exciton ( coupling together of an electron with an electron vacancy ), etc..
Does the vacuum crystal have quantum and bulk collective crystal phenomenon ? Is it possible that the elementary particles of normal matter are manifestations of quantum and bulk collective phenomenon occurring in the crystal structure of the vacuum crystal ? Can the proton be considered a composite particle consisting of particles which themselves are collective quantitizations of the vacuum crystal ? Or to put the question another way, just exactly what are these things called quarks that form nucleons ? Can the thermal transverse primal phonons of the vacuum crystal be equated with the ultra low frequency virtual photons of quantum electrodynamics ? Or perhaps the question should be, just how many collective quantitization types ( elementary particles ) can the ultra low frequency transverse primal phonons ( virtual photons ) of the vacuum crystal ( quantum electrodynamic sea / Dirac sea ) form ?
A partial list of the potential consequences of the vacuum being a crystalline structure are:
1) Faster than the speed of light wave and particle phenomenon.
2) A longitudinal and transverse primal phonon spectra for the vacuum crystal structure.
3) Photons and normal matter crystal phonons have exactly the same energy - frequency quantitization relationship ( E = h f ).
4) Matter preferred over anti - matter.
5) Photons describable as interference pattern of linearly coupled transverse primal phonons of the vacuum crystal structure, which are in thermal equilibrium with the vacuum crystal transverse primal phonon background thermal field.
6) Special relativity relationships derivable as a coupling relationship between background thermal transverse primal phonon field of the vacuum crystal and the coupled transverse primal phonons composing the elementary particles.
7) The existence of other matter types of very low interaction ( coupling ) with normal matter, for example, the neutrino.
8) The elementary particles as different types of dynamic quantitizations of transverse primal phonons.
9) Gravitation as the consequence of a gradient in the twin transverse primal phonon absorption process occurring at the location of a particle ( the tractor beam effect derived in the September 86 issue of THE UFO REPORT ). Note that the twin photon or twin transverse primal phonon absorption process gives the required spin two or zero interaction of a graviton particle.
In future issues of THE UFO REPORT I will delve into and derive some of these potential consequences of the vacuum being a crystalline structure.
Contrary to the public perception science / physics is a very political endeavor with many vested interests and strong egos at work. My hope and intent is that this article and others to follow will eventually have the effect of making the thought of the vacuum as a crystalline structure socially acceptable in the scientific community.
